Introduction

This is a unique 2-day interactive course covering a rare combination of topics: “Trade Finance” and “Credit & Political Risks Insurance(CPRI)” from a very practical perspective using a lot of case studies.

In the current turbulent environment it is especially important to understand how the risk-mitigating instruments may work together.

After attending the course the participants will enhance their knowledge of modern trends in trade finance, best way to cooperate withbanks and other financial institutions, various risk mitigating instruments andtheir interplay as well as credit and political risks insurance.

The Course Is Designed For: origination managers, lawyers, relationship bankers, insurance practitioners, finance and accounting managers to brush their knowledge on lending and trade finance.

What will you Learn?

Module 1 & 2 perfectly work together providing an overview of fundamentals as well as practical tips. There are case studies incorporated throughout.
Module 3 & 4 are continuing the topics discussed during Day 1 and building on with advanced case studies on trade finance. To finish the course the participants will have a chance to discuss other useful structures for a trader, i.e. supply chain finance, receivables finance, self-funded trading desks and there is an overview of the recent trends in digitalization of trade.

DAY 1

Module 1: Trade Finance: risks, structures, bank relationships, facilities

– This module is designed to overview fundamentals. Some questions that we are looking into:
– Risks in trade
– Understanding working capital
– Bank relationship and bank facilities
– Structures to review: bank guarantees and their types (advance payment guarantee, performance bond, payment guarantee, money-retention guarantee, warranty guarantee); letter of credit; stand-by letter of credit; payment undertaking guarantee; parent company guarantee; documentary collection.
– Advising, confirming and nominated banks and their role
– What is necessary to take into account when structuring credit support

Module 2: Credit and Political Risks Insurance

They say that not 100% claims under CPRI policies are compliant. It means that a company cannot get an expected payout. Moreover, the terms and conditions in some policies are not 100% intuitive even for an experienced financier. Just a couple of words may change an expected payout by at least 1/3.

There are also new trends affecting underwriting the risks in the extractive industries, e.g. ESG. How well credit is interlinked with ESG in the modern world?

Module 3: Trade Finance. Independent Undertakings. Case studies. Advanced

With fundamentals reviewed in DAY 1 this module is devoted to as many cases regarding LC, stand-by LC, bank guarantee and combating fraud in trade finance as we could fit within 2 hours.

Some questions that we are looking into:

– Does your bank distinguish between performance and financial guarantees?
– Why is it important to know?
– Documents countersigned by Applicant: is it ok?
– Issuing bank rejecting pay out due to potential fraud
– Are you sure that all your guarantees are workable instruments? Is it obvious? Bad wordings are there!
– Claiming process in case of a non-performance of your counterparty
– Credit tolerance and fluctuation
– Colour of the documents that you present
– Are there FM clauses in LCs?

Your trainer has over 20 years of experience and has worked for major international banks and corporates performing various roles in international trade, cash management, syndications, corporate affairs, trade and corporate finance.

For more than 7 years in the last corporate role the trainer was leading a team at an international energy trading group of companies headquartered in London (UK) with subsidiaries in Singapore, Switzerland, France, Germany and the USA, being responsible for managing the group’s banking panel, raising funding for the group’s trading activities, running back office functions in London and Singapore for various trade finance and credit and political risks insurance instruments to support global commodity trading (gas, LNG, power, oil and oil products) in Europe, Americas and Asia. The trainer is also a frequent moderator and a keynote speaker at international conferences and seminars arranged by SWIFT, ICC, GTR and TXF and used to lecture at a corporate trading academy for several years.

The trainer has two university degrees in banking and finance, a university degree in management consultancy and organizational change and holds a CSDG certificate from the International Chamber of Commerce.
